Designing opportunities for place-based storytelling

Epic Decade designed and produced the Make It Yours (MIY) Story Studio as an initiative of the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation’s tourism marketing campaign. It was a series of public pop-up spaces, events, and a social media campaign aimed at bringing Rhode Islanders into the conversation around the state's future. Inspired by Rhode Islanders’ satirizations of the state’s new logo, the MIY identity embraces the idea of everyone expressing their own unique “Rhode Island Experience.”

Each color and mark combination represents a different MIY value as well as a specific element of the program, creating a dynamic and flexible system. The main space in Providence featured a storytelling wall, experience map, photo booth, storyteller’s video booth, and space for workshops and events. Stories and raw material collected through social media became the foundation of a digital ad campaign for Rhode Island tourism, which later informed a brand refresh for the state.
